THE BEST MEMORIES OF KEENELAND

Spring is in full bloom right now.  The birds are singing and the cherry willow trees are in full bloom.  This is such a great time of the year, especially since it means that the Keeneland Racing season is BACK 😊.  From the sound of the trumpet heralding another race is about to begin to the roar of the crowd on the back stretch to the great smell of the burgoo in the air, it is such a fantastic time to be in Lexington, Ky.

Reminiscent of the Past

The race season brings back many fond memories, one of which I would like to share with you about my grandmother.  Jane Francis Bluebelle Malone Smith was the most wonderful person that ever graced the race track.  Jane raised four children on her own through the depression, often working double shifts just to put food on the table for her family.  If she told you dinner was at 5:30 and you didn’t show her the respect by being on time, you could either pick through the trash for dinner or go hungry.  Those were your options.

When In Doubt

Jane lived for that special month of the year when the season was upon us.  Back in the day, she would house jockeys/trainers/riders at her house during the season, trying to pick their brains for any inside information she could get.  Each day she would study the Racing Form, highlighting horses she liked & her thoughts, eventually determining whom she would be betting on that day.  She taught me everything I know about reading the form.  When she got older, she had problems walking.  Wasn’t a problem at the track since she knew most of the people at the betting window & they allowed a little 13 year old boy to place her bets.  There is NOTHING better than watching a race unfold that leads to you holding onto a winning bet at the track. One last bit of advice from Jane Francis Bluebelle Malonewas : “When in doubt bet on the Gray horse, especially in the MUD”
